Cardiopulmonary Services at Rutherford Regional is a department which combines Respiratory Therapy, Pulmonary, Cardiac, and Neurologic Diagnostics into a single department. Those served by the Department range from the eldest geriatric patient to the tiniest premature infant. Cardiopulmonary Services works with patients in every unit of the hospital, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year with 25 trained staff members to take care of our patients.

The main functions of the Department consist of:

  • Life Support. Respiratory Therapy is on the front lines in life support. We are involved in all cardiac codes, and infant C-section deliveries where we perform airway management, ventilation and CPR as needed. We manage all long and short term ventilation in both the adult and infant (outside of the OR).
  • Restorative Therapy. Routine care is provided to inpatients, outpatients, and emergency department patients which includes breathing treatments and oxygen therapy. Patient education topics include asthma management, use of MDIs and dangers of smoking.
  • Diagnostics Services. Cardiopulmonary Services provide diagnostic procedures. These include Pulmonary Function Testing for diseases such as asthma and emphysema, Bronchoscopy to look for lung cancer or infections, EEG for seizures, Echocardiology for cardiac flow functions, and EKG and Treadmill for electrical problems of the heart.

At Rutherford Regional, Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP) work under the medical direction of a board certified pulmonary physician. All have passed national exams administered by the National Board of Respiratory Care and are licensed to practice respiratory care by the North Carolina Respiratory Care Board.
