A test to check the arteries that supply the heart muscle with blood, and to evaluate the heart values and heart function. It is done to determine the cause of chest pain or other symptoms.
Instructions:
- You may be placed on a special diet.
- No strenuous exercise for three (3) days (examples – tennis, jogging, aerobics, similar sports).
- Lift no more than ten (10) pounds for three (3) days.
- Drink eight to ten (8 ounce) glasses of liquids (water or juice) every day for two (2) days.
- Press the site firmly for twenty minutes if bleeding of “lump” occurs at site, have someone call doctor.
- Do not take aspirin unless ordered by doctor.
- Take medicine as ordered by doctor.
- Remove dressing in 24 hours. May take shower or bath.
- Do not climb steps (more than 5) for twenty-four hours after the catheterization.
Contact your doctor if any of the following occurs:
- Fever of 101 degrees F or above.
- Pain/redness/swelling at site.
- Chills.
- Yellow drainage from site.
- Bleeding or “lump” at site.
- Chest pain or chest tightness not relieved by rest and taken Nitroglycerin tablet (dissolved under the tongue) five (5) minutes apart for total of three (3) tablets, (if ordered by doctor).
- Shortness of breath, rapid heart beat or dizziness that last longer than five (5) minutes and not relieved by rest.
If unable to contact your doctor and feel you have an emergency, go the Emergency Department.
